Hiking – River Deep, Mountain High
Some favourite trails of an outdoor writer
There are few places I’d rather be than on a mountain. Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to hike in various parts of the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Balkans, France, Italy, Spain, the UK and other parts of Europe – as well as trekking in the mountains of Eastern Turkey, Iran, the Tien Shan, the Karakoram, Ladakh and Patagonia. However it is the mountains of Central and Southeast Europe which I have come to know best, through numerous hiking trips into some of the wilder corners of Albania, Austria, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Slovenia. As a travel and outdoor writer I’ve written hiking guides to several of these places, including some unforgettable long-distance trails.
Click on the following pages for more information on two of my favourite long-distance hiking routes, the Alpe Adria Trail and Peaks of the Balkans Trail, or click here for information on the Juliana Trail in Slovenia, which I’m currently writing the first guidebook to.
Alpe Adria Trail

Peaks of the Balkans
