Exploring the mountains of Montenegro since 2004

It was an old postcard pinned to the wall of a Croatian hiking club that did it – a photo of improbably sheer-sided peaks surrounding a jewel-like lake in Durmitor National Park, which first led me to travel to Montenegro in 2004. As a travel writer I have returned to Montenegro many times since that first trip, visiting all of its national parks, hiking in all of the country’s main mountain areas, and exploring places well off the beaten track. I have written about the environmental threats posed to the pristine wilderness that is Montenegro’s Lake Skadar National Park, hiked through the Accursed Mountains on the border with Albania, explored the Unesco-listed Bay of Kotor and followed in the footsteps of legendary adventurer and travel writer Edith Durham – and in between times usually found time to enjoy some of Montenegro’s wonderfully full-bodied wines, and to indulge in that most iconic of Balkan tipples, homemade rakija.

I wrote the first English-language hiking guide to Montenegro (The Mountains of Montenegro, published by Cicerone) back in 2007, and the first English-language guide to walking the epic Peaks of the Balkans Trail, which stretches 192km through the breathtakingly wild and remote borderlands of Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania, in 2017. I’ve also written a guidebook to Montenegro for Berlitz, and updated the 5th edition of the Bradt guide to Montenegro, with bylines including Geographical, Hidden Europe, The Independent, Luštica, The National, Outdoor Enthusiast, The Telegraph, The Great Outdoors, Vanity Fair, Woman’s Own and Wanderlust.
