Skopje, old & new

The historic Stone Bridge (Kamen most, built in the 15th century) over the River Vardar and the new Archaeological Museum, Skopje, Macedonia. New architecture such as the Archaeological Museum – part of the Skopje 2014 project – has come under considerable criticism both for its extravagant expense (costs have already run to over 200 million euros, and Macedonia is one of the poorest countries in Europe, with high unemployment), and its building style, ostensibly Neoclassical but regarded by many as overtly narrow in its portrayal of Macedonia’s rich and multifaceted history. © Rudolf Abraham.
