During the First World War this area lay on the front line of the so-called Isonzo Front, where some half a million Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers (including around half of the total Italian casualties from the entire First World War) lost their lives fighting between 1915 and 1917.
The Alpe Adria Trail is a 750km hiking route through Austria/Slovenia/Italy, which I was recently commissioned to write the first English-language guidebook for.
