The Nockberge mountains in Carinthia, Austria, on the Alpe Adria Trail © Rudolf Abraham

Nockberge National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Pictured here, mountains reflected in the surface of the Nessbodensee, a small alpine tarn below the Kleiner Rosennock (top), and the so-called ‘Garnet Gate’ on Granattor, Millstätter Alpe, just south of the national park boundary (bottom).
The Alpe Adria Trail is a 750km hiking route through Austria/Slovenia/Italy, which I’m currently writing the first English-language guidebook to, for Bradt.
