The Roman amphitheatre in Pula, Istria, Croatia
Built during the 1st century AD, Pula’s arena (as it is affectionately known in Croatia) is one of the six largest surviving Roman amphitheatres in the world, and is exceptionally well preserved – despite having been pillaged for building materials over the centuries (you’ll find some of its stonework in the base of the nearby cathedral bell tower), and narrowly escaping being pulled down completely in the 15th century when Pula’s Venetian overlords suggested it should be dismantled and transported to Venice, to be reassembled there.
