Ironbridge (1): Tar tunnel

Tar tunnel in Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire, UK. Ironbridge Gorge is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The so-called ‘tar tunnel’ dates from 1787, when miners attempting to dig a canal tunnel into the hillside (as part of the Coalport Canal) struck bitumen, which continues to ooze out of the tunnel’s brick walls over 200 years later.
