The East Side Gallery is a 1.3km remaining strip of the former Berlin Wall, along Mühlenstraße by the River Spree in Berlin’s Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough. The East side of the Wall was painted with a series of large murals by international artists in 1990 – although following damage over subsequent years, they were repainted in 2009. Perhaps the best known work is Russian artist Dmitri Vrubel’s ‘My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love’, depicting former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and his East German counterpart Erich Honecker locked in a fraternal communist kiss.

In 2013 a section of the wall and its historic murals was ripped down by developers to make way for a series of luxury apartments, sparking public outcry and a series of protests.
