Viareggio Carnival, Tuscany Italy © Rudolf Abraham
The Viareggio Carnival in Tuscany, Italy, is famous for its vast and spectacularly elaborate floats. There are five parades, spread over the month around Lent. This was shot during the fourth parade, on 28 February 2017 – when the parade itself had to be cancelled due to high winds (which threatened to blow some of the floats over)… although that didn’t stop the carnival going ahead in full swing at La Citadella, the place on the edge of town where the floats are kept in huge storage hangers (you can see one of them in the background; yes, that’s Trump, more on that one in a later post). A bit like being hit by a whole carnival parade simultaneously. I love photographing carnivals, and shooting this one in particular was sooo much fun.
